Green Tea Gimlet

The Gimlet is among the family of classic cocktails that came to prominence about in the early part of the 20th century when popular culture glamorized drinking in dimly lit bars and cafes. Artists, authors, musicians, and more were drinking highballs, martinis, old fashioned's and more and the gimlet joined the ranks. This simple drink got its biggest boost when it was immortalized in The Long Goodbye, a novel by Raymond Chandler. In it, the protagonist claimed, "a real gimlet is half gin and half Rose's Lime juice and nothing else. It beats martinis hollow."

The fact that Chandler's character specifically mentions Rose' Lime as an ingredient goes back to the days when the British Royal Navy used preserved, sweetened lime juice to fight off scurvy. Naturally, the sailors began mixing the Rose's with the gin they had on hand and the gimlet was born.

In its most basic form a gimlet is a made from gin and lime juice, however many iterations have now allowed for vodka as a feasible substitution for the gin. The taste of a gimlet is intended to be refreshing and somewhat biting to the consumer. Served chilled, this drink is destined to be enjoyed during the warmer months.

Making the Green Tea Syrup

Ingredients and supplies you'll need:

In a saucepan, bring the water and sugar to a boil. For bigger batches of drinks, you can simply double the portions.

Once the water is boiling add in the sugar and stir until it is dissolved. Once dissolved, turn off the heat allowing the water to come down to a steep. Add the Taylors Pure Green Tea bag(s). Steep the tea for 6 to 7 minutes. Once the tea is ready, remove the tea bags, place the tea in a large pitcher and let it rest in the refrigerator until cold.

How to Make the Pure Green Tea Gimlet

With the tea properly chilled, you'll go about making this take on a gimlet by simply following the recipe below:

Ingredients you'll need:

  • 1.5 oz vodka
  • 3/4 oz. of fresh lemon/lime juice
  • 1 oz of the Pure Gree Tea syrup
  • Ice
  • Lime or mint for garnish

Once you've got your ingredients ready, you'll want to combine the vodka, fresh lemon/lime juice, and the green tea syrup in a cocktail shaker. Add some ice and give it a good shake. This will thicken up the cocktail and add a little bit of foam on top of the pour. After a good shake, you can pour everything into a coupe or martini glass.

Enjoy responsibly!
